The Gentlemen's Club
Participants will be on the edge of their seats in this workshop that addresses the academic and social development of the non-achieving, difficult to manage male student. Educators, counselors, parents and administrators have benefited from the anyone-can-be trained-to-do-these strategies for working with difficult students presented in this workshop. Humor, role playing, brief video clips of actual student behaviors and much more are a part of this dynamic session. You will walk away with areas to pinpoint for adjustment in your school. You will learn techniques that you can use to build rapport and encourage active participation from the students you have the most difficulty reaching.
The Impact of Expectations on Student Achievement
While addressing varied instructional needs, educators must address climate and behavioral issues. Participants will hear ways to address the affective and cognitive aspects of student learning as a means of empowering and motivating students. Strategies for helping students develop a locus of control and a sense of belonging will be provided in this session.
Teacher Expectations and Student Achievement
This presentation is designed to help the educator begin to think about the concepts of innate ability and self-efficacy and to understand how expectations are formed. A model for understanding teacher expectations will be shared. Attitudinal issues are discussed and practical strategies for demonstrating positive expectations are woven throughout the presentation. Lecturettes and opportunities to participate in short topic focused activities are a part of this session.
Recognizing and Utilizing the Cultural Characteristics of African American Students in Academic Settings
How well do you understand the teaching/learning socio-cultural systems that exist in academic settings? This workshop addresses students' and teachers' efforts to adapt to their environment as they work together in academic settings. An exploration of the cultural cognition of some African American students is done with participants. Concrete examples of student behaviors and effective responses that teachers may utilize to incorporate cultural preferences and differing world views into learning experiences make this presentation a favorite. If you are looking to improve minority student achievement, this workshop is a must!
Creating Positive Classroom Environments For All Students
Managing the difficult student can be time consuming and exhaustive. What are some techniques that move past blaming students' personal circumstances to a more positive approach to helping students? Developing a locus of control and a sense of belonging in students can be effective tools to empower and encourage even the most difficult. Punishment vs. discipline will be explored as a program model for effective management of student behavior. The presenter will discuss a win-win approach to creating a positive learning environment in the classroom.
The Communicative Tendencies of Four Groups of Americans
Did you know that there are rules of taking turns in conversation that vary from one cultural group to another? While some cultural groups may think it is O.K. to ask personal questions of a person met for the first time, other groups find it improper and intrusive. These are but two communicative tendencies that may be observed when people communicate. It is not uncommon for people to fail to understand one another. These misunderstandings occur in schools and communities around the world. This workshop addresses some characteristics of certain groups of people that have implications for learning. Participants will learn how communicative tendencies affect the quality of teacher-student and teacher-parent interactions.
Understanding & Addressing Sexual Harassment in Schools
Attendees will learn
- the definition of sexual harassment,
- examples of behavior that may be considered sexual harassment, and
- rights and responsibilities related to sexual harassment. Specific strategies for handling reports of sexual harassment and for interviewing persons involved in incidents of alleged sexual harassment will be provided to attendees. Lecture, overheads, group discussion and individual activities will all be a part of this experiential
workshop. Helpful handouts will be provided.

Title IX: Gender Equity & Gender Bias in Schools Today
As schools and educational systems work toward providing equitable opportunities for all of its students, some discrepancies remain. Issues such as enrollment of girls in nontraditional courses, student teacher interactions, participation of girls in sports and advanced math and science courses continue to plague some schools and classes. This session examines gender bias by looking as issues about tests, testing, learning styles and enrollment practices. Participants get an overview of many of the above sited issues, as well as suggested strategies to address each.
Teaching Strategies for Diverse Learners
If you are faced with situations where a small identifiable group of students is not meeting district or state standards even though you are working hard to change this picture? Maybe you know some employees who are uncomfortable meeting parents or community members from minority groups.
